2017 MIDDLE SCHOOL LACROSSE SEASON INFORMATION
Registration for our Scarborough Youth Lacrosse-Middle School Teams will be open January 1, 2017 to March 6, 2017.
There are some differences for the BOYS offering and the GIRLS offering. We had an outstanding season in 2016 and we're looking to following up on that success.
Below are answers to some of the questions you may have:
1. IS SCARBOROUGH YOUTH LACROSSE OFFERING 7th-8th GRADE PROGRAMING:
For BOYS, the answer is YES. Our feeling is there are too many boys at these grade levels to be accommadated properly through the Middle School. We have all 4 of our coaches coming back, and are ready for another great season,
For GIRLS, the answer is NO. The girls will play through the Middle School. There will be pre and post season opportunities available for both genders. More information to follow.
2. IS SCARBOROUGH 7th-8th GRADE LACROSSE THE SAME AS SCARBOROUGH YOUTH LACROSSE - 3rd thru 6th GRADE PROGRAM:
If you played on our SYL 5-6 teams last year, you will notice some changes as you step up to the 7th and 8th grade teams. Most noticeably the coaching staff and the programming. We have been able to secure some of the best coaches in the area for our MS aged teams. Most are former Scarborough youth and HS players that have played in college and have returned to give back. Our middle school coaches are working together with our Scarborough HS Red Storm varsity coaches to prepare these players for the next step. The practices are more competitive and challenging, and we play harder competition and more games. Playing time is guaranteed for each player, but amount of time is earned.
3. FOR OUR 8TH GRADERS- WHAT IS DIFFERENT THIS YEAR?
The 2017 MS SYL Club will be even better this year. The majority of the coaches are back and bringing with them, the knowledge and experience to improve the players. Our teams will be split into even-weighted teams this year, and our schedule will be against even-weighted teams. There may be an opportunity to play a few games to challenge our skills but primarily our games will be even-weighted vs even-weighted teams from other towns.
4. HOW DOES THE SCARBOROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL OFFERING A 7TH- 8TH GRADE TEAMS THIS SEASON AFFECT THE SYL CLUB TEAM?
Those school teams should not affect the SYL 7th-8th grade CLUB teams. The girls will have only one choice, playing for the Scarborough Middle School Team.
Although the school will offer a boys lacrosse Middle School Team, we are suggesting the boys choose the Scarborough YOUTH CLUB Lacrosse 7th-8th Grade Team based on the coaches secured, schedule, and experience offered through SYL. You will get the best middle school coaching in the State of Maine.
5. WILL THERE BE WEEKDAY GAMES?
The school schedule for girls will be primarily weekday games. For the boys SYL CLUB lacrosse, there will be very few games during the week. We will play most of the club games on Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays.
6. WILL THERE BE EVALUATIONS?
Yes there will be. The only way to make even-weighted teams is to evaluate the players and split as evenly as possible. Evaluations will be made at the beginning of the season. All our players will practice together most of the time.
7. WILL THERE BE A SELECT TEAM THIS YEAR?
There may be an opportunity to play in a SELECT league during the spring against other local select teams and clubs from other areas. This team would be invite only and coached by the Red Storm Varsity Coach, Joe Hezlep. Only players who are members of the SYL Club Team are eligible for consideration and must be unanimously approved by all the SYL 7th-8th Grade coaches. This select team is above and beyond the SYL Club.
8. WHEN WILL WE START?
The SYL Middle School teams get top priority in Scarborough. We will start pre-season work in mid-March and in conjunction with the high school schedule. The SPRING TRAINING offering will begin late Feb/Early March. More info to come.
